What is Art?

The thesaurus gives us these alternatives: skill, craft, technique, knack, facility, ability, know-how.  I think these words lend more to the public perception of the word art than its actual definition.

“the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination… producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power” .  I like the definition.  I feel that the definition leaves the realm of art open to all people.  Inversely the thesaurus shuts out or rather intimidates people from creating art, because it implies a certain level of power or status.

The point?  As an artist I pull from every facet of life and every corner of the art world.  I like a lot of different things visually, sensually and aurally and rely on them in my work.  Is that to say I “like” or “enjoy” every piece of art or artist?  No.  But I can appreciate what someone does even if I don’t like it.  By doing so I can take away something from everything I encounter.  And to me this is what I like about art, everybody gets to create no matter how shoddy or insignificant it may be, we are all expressing ourselves in the best way we know how.
